๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค's Gift of Rest and Holiness
๐ THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT
"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค thy Elohiym: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
— Exodus 20:8-11 (CEPHER)
⏰ WHEN THE SABBATH BEGINS AND ENDS
๐ Biblical Time Keeping
The Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday evening and ends at sunset on Saturday evening, following the biblical pattern where each day begins at evening:
"And the evening and the morning were the first day." — Genesis 1:5
⚠️ Preparation Day
Friday is called the preparation day (paraskeue in Greek), when all necessary work should be completed before the Sabbath begins. This includes cooking, cleaning, and any servile labor.
๐ซ WHAT CONSTITUTES SERVILE WORK
The Hebrew term for servile work is "melakah" (ืְืָืืָื), referring to creative, productive labor. The Sabbath prohibits:
❌ FORBIDDEN ACTIVITIES
- Buying and selling - Commercial transactions, shopping, business dealings
- Cooking and food preparation - Elaborate meal preparation (light warming permitted)
- Regular employment/business - Professional work, office tasks, labor for wages
- Construction and crafts - Building, repairs, creative projects, artwork
- Heavy cleaning - Deep cleaning, laundry, major household tasks
- Carrying burdens - Heavy lifting, moving items outside private domain
- Kindling fires for work - Starting fires for productive purposes
✅ PERMITTED ACTIVITIES
- Prayer and worship - Individual and corporate worship, praise, thanksgiving
- Scripture study - Reading, meditation, Torah study, spiritual learning
- Fellowship and rest - Visiting, conversation, relaxation, family time
- Acts of mercy/healing - Caring for sick, helping those in need
- Light meal preparation - Simple food warming, basic meal assembly
- Walking and meditation - Leisurely walks, nature appreciation, contemplation
- Caring for urgent needs - Essential care for people, animals, emergencies
"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค..." — Isaiah 58:13-14

✨ THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE
๐ A Sign of the Covenant
"It is a sign between me and the children of Yisra'el forever: for in six days ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed." — Exodus 31:17
๐️ A Foretaste of Eternal Rest
The Sabbath is a weekly reminder of the eternal rest that awaits the faithful, a rehearsal for the Kingdom of ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค. It teaches us to cease from our own works and trust in His provision.
⚖️ A Test of Obedience
Sabbath observance reveals whether we truly trust ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค to provide for our needs when we set aside our own efforts. It distinguishes those who serve Him from those who serve mammon.
๐ THE SABBATH BLESSING
"And Elohiym blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which Elohiym created and made."
— Genesis 2:3
๐ REMEMBER & OBSERVE
The Sabbath is not a burden but a delight, not a restriction but a liberation. It calls us to step out of the world's frantic pace and into ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐ค's perfect rest, to cease from our labors and remember that He is Elohiym.
